What to Do When You Get a Flat Tire

3 min readBy Exotic Tire Shop

A flat tire always shows up at a bad time. The good news is that handling one calmly keeps a small problem from turning into an expensive one. Here's what to do.

Get somewhere safe first

If you feel a tire go while driving, ease off the gas and steer toward the shoulder or a parking lot. Don't slam the brakes. Once you're stopped, turn on your hazards and get yourself clear of moving traffic. A tire is replaceable — waiting on a busy shoulder is the real risk.

Don't keep driving on it

Rolling on a flat for even a mile chews up the sidewall and can wreck a tire that was otherwise repairable. It can also damage the wheel. If the tire is fully flat, the smart move is to stop and get help rather than push to the next exit.

Fix it yourself or call

If you've got a good spare, the tools, and a safe spot, a swap is doable. But a lot of newer cars don't carry a real spare, lug nuts can be seized, and changing a tire in traffic or in the rain isn't worth it. That's exactly when a mobile tire service earns its keep — we come to you, anywhere in Plantation or Fort Lauderdale, and handle it while you stay safe.

Know whether it can be repaired

A nail or screw in the tread area can usually be fixed for good with a proper plug-patch from the inside. Damage in the sidewall, or a tire that ran flat and overheated, generally can't be repaired safely and needs a replacement. We'll tell you straight which one you're dealing with.
